This isn't terribly effective (you have to take a breath once in a while), so the wife of the burgomaster tries to soften up the invaders with a lavish carnival. So successful is this venture that the Spaniards allow the village to escape being decimated, or even taxed. An award-winner many times over, Carnival in Flanders was banned in Germany; evidently, Goebbels caught on that director Jacques Feyder and scenarists Bernard Zimmer and Charles Spaak were drawing deliberate parallels between the Spanish and the then-burgeoning Nazis.

洼田正孝平凡的大学生夜神月（洼田正孝饰）跟在警视厅搜查一课上班的父亲夜神总一郎以及妹妹妆裕共同生活。某天，他捡到死神丢落在人间的笔记本，名字被写在这个本子上的人就会真的死去。开始，夜神月只是当成玩笑，把威胁好友鸭田的佐古田的名字写了上去，但是佐古田真的死掉了。佐古田的死让很多人感到高兴，而月也产生了一种奇妙的感觉。之后，月使用笔记的力量不断杀死罪犯，引起了国际刑警组织的注意，国际刑警组织邀请神秘的名侦探L（山崎贤人饰）来到日本，同夜神总一郎等人共同展开调查。从此，夜神月与L展开了生死对决。
